AccorHotel Case Study

THE BRIEF:

With an extensive brand portfolio, AccorHotels are a global leader with ambitions to become the world’s benchmark hospitality player.  The opening of their flagship Novotel, Canary Wharf hotel, scheduled for November 2016, meant that they were seeking a new and talented group of hospitality professionals. Hosting a recruitment day, split into three sessions,  they called upon the services of Wildgoose to support them in providing a solution to facilitate the recruitment process, which they were keen to ensure remained relaxed, informal, engaging yet insightful. AccorHotel Group had employed facilitators to monitor the applicants during the sessions, so wanted them to take part in an activity that would give them insight into the individual’s character and work style.

THE SOLUTION:

Having fully understood the overall objectives of the sessions we selected our popular Indoor Spy School challenge to help facilitate the recruitment day. The problem solving, cryptic nature of this challenge suited the brief perfectly, and we translated this into a table-top challenge designed to test listening and leadership skills, as well as promoting problem solving, discussion and strategic thinking, among the applicants..

The AccorHotel Group needed the applicants to demonstrate these skills within a short period of time – each session was scheduled to last 45 minutes. Mindful of this, we adapted the content within the Indoor Spy School challenge to ensure it was concise, whilst giving the applicants as much opportunity to exhibit their skills. Questions, tasks and challenges were also created to ensure that they delivered measurable results for the facilitators to use later in the day, when conducting their formal interviews.

Split into teams of around 5-8 people, each group was  encouraged to move around the room working together – solving clues, deciphering codes and completing tasks. Tasks were unlocked using our indoor recognition technology and were seamlessly incorporated into the quintessentially British props and a furnishings that the AccorHotel Group had chosen to theme the venue  – a task activated by scanning an image hidden in an iconic red telephone box or post box were examples of this. Upon completion of the tasks, facilitators were then able to use the statistical features of the app to monitor the accuracy of the applicant’s answers to support their behavioural observations.

THE RESULT:

The relaxed and informal setting meant that applicants were able to be themselves, let their guard down and express themselves honestly, which in turn gave the AccorHotel Group’s recruitment team a unique opportunity to observe, monitor and ultimately assess applicants suitability for a role within the new, Novotel Canary Wharf hotel. Together with the behavioural elements of the activity, facilitators had at their disposal a useful and insightful tool in the form of statistics gathered via the Wildgoose app to aid their one to one interviews.
