An in-person indoor escape activity for 89 colleagues from four GP practices near Halifax, delivered with an Onsite Host for Calder & Ryburn Primary Care Network.

The Brief

Every September, Calder & Ryburn Primary Care Network brings together staff from all four of its GP practices for an annual team building afternoon. Caitlyn Varley, the PCN’s Personalised Care & Projects Lead, had already worked with Wildgoose twice: an indoor Level Up activity in 2024 and a Spy School GPS outdoor activity around Halifax in 2025. In June she got back in touch:

It’s us again! We are due to host our annual PCN level team building event in September. We are hoping to do something similar to before, but different as don’t want it to be too predictable for staff. I think we’re going to be in an indoor Venue (Home - The Venue Bowers Mill) but this is not confirmed yet.

— Caitlyn Varley, Personalised Care & Projects Lead, Calder & Ryburn Primary Care Network

After a planning call with Caitlyn and her colleagues Georgina Gledhill and Anna Duggan, one option stood out. Caitlyn came back keen on our newest activity, Indoor Escape: The Hidden Lab, designed in partnership with Tree-Nation, and asked us to “make sure we get an in-person host”.

The requirements were:

  • An afternoon activity for staff from all four GP practices in the PCN, which grew from around 60 to 89 people
  • Something that felt fresh for a team that had already enjoyed two Wildgoose activities
  • An indoor activity at The Venue Bowers Mill, near Halifax, starting at 1:30pm
  • A host in person to bring the whole group together
  • Flexibility to change details, as the date moved from 2 to 9 September at the request of the practices

The Solution: Indoor Escape: The Hidden Lab

Wildgoose delivered Indoor Escape: The Hidden Lab, our new escape activity designed in partnership with Tree-Nation, set up indoors at The Venue Bowers Mill. Teams worked together on the Mobile Adventures app to solve puzzles and unlock each level of the lab, earning points as they went. The difference is what those points become: every point scored helps plant real trees, so the competition has an impact long after the afternoon is over.

Because the activity was so new, we booked Calder & Ryburn in with the flexibility to switch activity once they had seen how its first outings went, so the PCN could commit to the date without any risk. When the practices moved the date and numbers rose from 62 to 89, both changes were simply added to the booking. The trees were gifted through Tree-Nation in the name of Calder & Ryburn Primary Care Network, giving the PCN something to share with staff and patients afterwards.

Key delivery details:

  • Date: Wednesday 9 September 2026
  • Time: 13:30 to 15:00, covering the briefing, the activity and the wrap-up
  • Format: In-person indoor activity at The Venue Bowers Mill, near Halifax, West Yorkshire
  • Hosting: Onsite Host, Dave, delivering the briefing and wrap-up in person
  • Group size: 89 participants from four GP practices, working in teams
  • Impact: 623 trees planted through Tree-Nation, gifted in the PCN’s name and visible in the Wildgoose forest on Tree-Nation

The Result

On 9 September, 89 colleagues from across the PCN’s four practices took on Indoor Escape: The Hidden Lab together, and between them planted 623 trees, all recorded in the Wildgoose forest on Tree-Nation. The tree-planting element changed how teams competed: some decided not to spend points to unlock the next level, because it would have meant fewer trees. Caitlyn shared the team’s feedback a few days later:

Dave is an absolute attribute to your team! Lots of the feedback includes what a great host he was. Feedback from the day was overall positive… The fact that points equated to trees was highly encouraged by everyone, some teams refused to spend points to get to the next level as it meant less trees. Thanks again Jonny, as always, such a well-run event!

— Caitlyn Varley, Personalised Care & Projects Lead, Calder & Ryburn Primary Care Network

Anna Duggan summed up three years of PCN team days in her Trustpilot review, titled “Great experience with Wildgoose”:

We have used Wildgoose now for three different activities while doing our annual team building across the PCN. Our experience has always been positive and fun!

— Anna Duggan, Calder & Ryburn Primary Care Network, Trustpilot review

The PCN also wrote about the afternoon on its own website, in an article on corporate team building. See more verified feedback on our Trustpilot reviews page.

Why It Worked

  • A different activity each year kept the PCN’s annual team day fresh, while the planning stayed familiar
  • Turning points into trees gave the competition a purpose that everyone could get behind, and changed how teams made decisions
  • An Onsite Host, Dave, gave 89 people from four practices a shared start and finish, and much of the feedback was about him
  • The activity ran entirely indoors at the PCN’s chosen venue, with no kit to bring in and no reliance on the weather
  • Booking with the flexibility to switch let the PCN commit early to a brand-new activity without any risk
  • A date change and a jump from 62 to 89 participants were added to the booking with no change to the plan
  • Trees gifted in the PCN’s name gave staff a lasting, shareable result from a single afternoon

FAQs

Can you change the date or activity after booking a team building activity?

Yes, within limits. Date and activity changes can be made free of charge if you let us know more than seven days before your activity. Bookings with an Onsite Host carry some extra restrictions, because a host has been reserved for your date, so it’s worth checking our terms and conditions or talking to us before you book.

Where can Indoor Escape: The Hidden Lab take place?

Anywhere indoors: an office, hotel or venue of your choice. It runs on the Mobile Adventures app and a laptop, with no kit to bring in and no reliance on the weather.

How does tree planting work in a team building activity?

In Indoor Escape: The Hidden Lab, teams earn points as they solve the lab’s challenges, and those points turn into real trees planted through our partnership with Tree-Nation. The trees can be gifted in your organisation’s name, so you have something to share with your team afterwards, and every tree planted is recorded in our Tree-Nation forest.

Can you have an Onsite Host for an indoor team building activity?

Yes. An Onsite Host travels to your venue to deliver the briefing and wrap-up face to face and supports teams throughout. A Remote Host, who joins by video link, is also available.

Can you add more people to a team building booking?

Yes. Participant numbers can be increased after you book, up to 48 hours before your activity, but they can’t be reduced. That’s why we recommend booking for your minimum number and adding people as your list grows, as Calder & Ryburn did when it went from 62 to 89.

How do you keep an annual team building day fresh?

Choose a different activity each year. Our range covers indoor, outdoor GPS, virtual and hybrid activities, so a returning team can try something new while the planning stays simple.
