The Brief

KBS Maritime approached us with a clear vision:

We’re looking to host an event for our apprentice open day. The intention is to take the candidates on a guided tour of Portsmouth Dockyard in the morning, and in the afternoon, split them into groups for a GPS-based treasure hunt that tests teamwork, initiative, and problem-solving.

The goal was to deliver a team-based activity that was fun, immersive, and — most importantly — a subtle but effective assessment tool for potential apprentices

The Solution

Wildgoose designed a fully customised GPS treasure hunt tailored to 10+ historic locations within Portsmouth Dockyard.

Key Features:

  • Played in teams of 4-5, each group guided by two assessors.
  • 15 interactive hotspots activated via GPS.
  • Each location featured:
  • A location-specific question
  • A trivia task (dockyard or company-related)
  • A creative photo or video challenge
  • Live leaderboard kept competition high and energy higher.
  • Company branding, logos, and colours embedded throughout.

The game was delivered with an onsite host to ensure smooth execution and high engagement.

The Results

  • 18 candidates, split into 5 teams
  • 10 assessors embedded with teams (2 per group)
  • 7 candidates invited to interview based on performance
  • 3 apprenticeship offers made as a direct result of the day

This event proved how a custom, location-aware digital experience could serve not only as entertainment-but as a strategic recruitment tool. It brought out critical soft skills:

  • Teamwork
  • Communication
  • Leadership potential
  • Problem-solving under pressure

The GPS challenge is now a reusable asset for KBS Maritime. With the content tailored and ready, future cohorts can enjoy the same experience with only minor hosting costs-making it an efficient long-term investment in talent assessment.
